The Peach Drop was a special yearly event in Atlanta, Georgia. It happened every New Year's Eve to celebrate the start of a new year. During the event, a giant peach, weighing about 800 pounds, slowly dropped from a tall tower. This peach was a symbol for Georgia, which is known as the "Peach State." The Peach Drop has not taken place since 2018.

History of the Peach Drop Event

From 1989 until 2017, the Peach Drop was held at a place called Underground Atlanta. The tower where the peach dropped from was 138 feet tall. The peach itself was made from fiberglass and foam. It was about 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide.

For the 2018 New Year's celebration, the event moved. The peach dropped from the Flatiron Building instead. The main party was held at Woodruff Park. This change happened because Underground Atlanta was sold to a private company. In 2019, the event was planned to return to Underground Atlanta.

Why the Peach Drop Took a Break

In 2019, the Peach Drop was put on hold. This means it didn't happen that year. The city wanted to make the event even better and bigger for the future. Atlanta's Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, explained that selling Underground Atlanta made things tricky. She felt the 2019 return didn't have enough planning or resources.

Then, in 2020 and 2021, the Peach Drop was canceled again. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These cancellations meant the event didn't happen for three years in a row.
