How Peaks-Kenny State Park Began

Peaks-Kenny State Park was created thanks to a generous gift. In 1964, a man named Francis J. Peaks donated the land to the state of Maine. He wanted to create a special place for everyone to enjoy.

Remembering the Peaks Family

Francis J. Peaks made this gift in honor of his family. The park was named after his sister, Annie Peaks Kenny. It also honors their parents, Joseph and Eliza Peaks. This way, the park helps keep their memory alive for many years to come.

Norwood Castle by the Lake

One interesting landmark in the park is Norwood Castle. This unique building sits right along the shore of Sebec Lake. It was built a long time ago, in 1890.

A Special Wedding Gift

Norwood Castle was originally built as a wedding gift. A wealthy lawyer named Willis Parsons had it built for his bride. Parsons was from Foxcroft, a town nearby. He later became the very first Commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. This department helps protect Maine's fish and wildlife.
