Early Life and Career
Pearl Sagar grew up in Belfast as a Protestant. She chose to work as a social worker in East Belfast, helping people in her community. She later married a soldier who served in the British Army.
Starting in Politics
In 1996, Pearl Sagar decided to get involved in politics. She teamed up with Monica McWilliams to ask the main political parties in Northern Ireland to include more women as candidates for an important group called the Northern Ireland Forum. This Forum was set up to discuss the future of Northern Ireland.
When their request didn't get much attention, Pearl and Monica decided to take action themselves. They created a new political group called the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition. Their goal was to have women run in the elections and have a voice in the peace process.
Becoming a Forum Member
Pearl Sagar ran for election in the East Belfast area but did not win a seat directly. However, her party, the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition, did very well overall. They finished in ninth place across Northern Ireland.
Because of their strong performance, the party was given two extra seats, known as "top-up" seats. Pearl Sagar received one of these seats, becoming a member of the Northern Ireland Forum. This was a big step for women in politics in the region.
Later Political Efforts
After her time in the Northern Ireland Forum, Pearl Sagar continued to be involved in politics. She ran for a seat on the Belfast City Council in 1997 but was not elected. She also tried again to win a seat in the 1998 Northern Ireland Assembly election for East Belfast, but she was unsuccessful.
Even after these election results, Pearl Sagar remained active. She became a consultant for a project called Vital Voices. This project works to empower women leaders around the world.
Recognition
Pearl Sagar's contributions were recognized when she was awarded an OBE. This honor was given to her in the New Year's Honours list, celebrating her work and dedication.
