Amazing Operations: Pedro Cavadas's Key Surgeries
Dr. Cavadas has performed several world-first surgeries that have changed lives.
First Double Hand Transplant
In December 2006, Dr. Cavadas made history. He successfully performed the very first double hand transplant on a woman. This was a huge step forward in medicine, giving someone new hands.
World's First Double Leg Transplant
In July 2011, Dr. Cavadas achieved another incredible feat. He performed the world's first double leg transplant on a 20-year-old man who had lost his legs. This complex surgery took 10 hours. During the operation, Dr. Cavadas and his team carefully connected nerves, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, and bone structures.
However, in June 2013, the patient faced a new health challenge. This challenge meant he could no longer take the special medicines needed to stop his body from rejecting the new legs. Because of this, his transplanted legs had to be removed again. Even so, this surgery showed what was possible in the world of transplants.
