Becoming a Doctor
Pedro Cavadas finished his medical studies in 1989 at the University of Valencia. He did very well in his studies. After that, he worked at Hospital La Fe in Valencia. There, he became a specialist in plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is a type of medicine where doctors fix or rebuild parts of the body.
Life-Changing Operations
Dr. Cavadas has performed several amazing surgeries that were the first of their kind in the world.
First Double Hand Transplant
In December 2006, Dr. Cavadas made history. He performed the first-ever double hand transplant on a woman. This was a very complex operation. It gave the woman a chance to use her hands again.
First Double Leg Transplant
In July 2011, Dr. Cavadas performed another world-first surgery. He did a double leg transplant on a 20-year-old man. The man had lost his legs before. This operation took about 10 hours. The team had to carefully connect nerves, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, and bones.
Sadly, in June 2013, the patient became sick with another illness. Because of this, he had to stop taking medicines that prevented his body from rejecting the new legs. This meant his new legs had to be removed again.
