Pedro Justo Berrío was an important Colombian lawyer, soldier, and politician. He held many important jobs in government. For example, he was the governor (leader) of Antioquia from 1864 to 1873.

He was born in a town called Santa Rosa de Osos in Antioquia in 1827. He passed away in Medellín, the capital city of Antioquia, in 1875.

You can find several places in Antioquia named after him. These include Berrío Park, a big square in the middle of Medellín. There is also a town called Puerto Berrío and the Salesian Pedro Justo Berrio School.

Growing Up and Education

Pedro Justo Berrío was the son of Lorenzo Berrio Hernández. His father was a trader and teacher in Santa Rosa de Osos. His mother was Juliana Rojas.

Pedro studied theology (the study of religion), philosophy, and law. He went to the San Fernando seminary in the city of Santa Fe of Antioquia. In 1851, he finished his law studies in Bogotá. This city was where the Liberal and Conservative political parties were formed. Pedro chose to follow the ideas of the Conservative party.

In 1858, he married Estefanía Díaz. They had six children together.

Pedro Justo Berrío became governor after the previous leader, who was from the Liberal party, was no longer in charge. Manuel Murillo Toro, who was the President of Colombia at the time, accepted this change. This decision helped set an example for how states could make their own choices.

In 1864, when he first became governor, his main goals were "peace, roads, and schools." He worked hard to make these things happen. He passed laws that made primary education (elementary school) required for everyone.

He also helped connect Antioquia to other parts of the country. He started building the Antioquia Railway in 1874. There is a special sign outside the La Quebrada tunnel that thanks him for his role in building the railway.
