Pedro Manrique de Lara (1553–1615) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He was a member of the Order of Saint Augustine, a group of priests. He held two very important jobs: he was the Bishop of Tortosa from 1601 to 1611, and then the Archbishop of Zaragoza from 1611 until he passed away in 1615.

Early Life and Church Career

Pedro Manrique de Lara was born in Crotone, Italy, in 1553. When he grew up, he became a priest in the Order of Saint Augustine. This was an important step in his life in the church.

Becoming a Bishop

On February 12, 1601, Pedro Manrique de Lara was chosen to be the Bishop of Tortosa. This decision was made during the time when Pope Clement VIII was the leader of the Catholic Church. A bishop is a high-ranking church official who oversees a specific area, called a diocese.

Serving as Viceroy

Towards the end of 1610, King Philip III of Spain gave Pedro Manrique another big job. He was named the Viceroy of Catalonia. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a region in the name of the king. Pedro Manrique moved to Barcelona to take on this role. His main focus as viceroy was dealing with issues related to the departure of the Catalan Moors.

Becoming an Archbishop

On April 8, 1611, Pedro Manrique received an even higher church position. He was appointed Archbishop of Zaragoza. This appointment happened during the time of Pope Paul V. An archbishop is a bishop of a main or metropolitan diocese, which is usually a very important city.

In August 1611, Pedro Manrique left Barcelona and traveled to Zaragoza. He officially started his new role as Archbishop on August 28. He continued to serve as the Archbishop of Zaragoza until he died on June 7, 1615, at the age of 62.
