Pedro Morenés y Álvarez de Eulate, born on September 17, 1948, is a Spanish politician. He served as Spain's Minister of Defense. He was also the Ambassador of Spain to the United States. Before becoming a minister, he led the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro from 2006 to 2011.

Pedro Morenés: Early Life and Learning
Pedro Morenés was born in Las Arenas, a town in the Vizcaya province of Spain. This was on September 17, 1948. He is the second son of Don José María de Morenés y Carvajal and Doña Ana Sofía Álvarez de Eulate y Mac-Mahón.
He went to the University of Navarra to study law. He also studied business administration at the University of Deusto. Later, he earned a master's degree. This degree was in ship management and economics. He got it from the Bremen Institute of Shipping Economics.
Pedro Morenés's Career Journey
Pedro Morenés started his career as a lawyer in 1979. He worked for private law firms for some time. In 1991, he joined the National Industry Institute (INI). There, he became the head of the Legal Services for the Shipbuilding Division.
He also taught classes. He was a professor of vessel chartering and shipping freight. He taught at the Spanish Maritime Institute of Madrid. He also taught at the European Institute for Maritime Studies.
In 1994, he became the managing director of the commercial part of the Shipbuilding Division at INI. He was also a member of its steering committee.
Roles in Government
Pedro Morenés held several important roles in the Spanish government:
- In May 1996, he was named Secretary of State for Defense. This role is part of the Ministry of Defense.
- Four years later, in May 2000, he became Secretary of State for Security. This was in the Ministry of the Interior. He held this position for two years.
- In August 2002, he moved to the Ministry of Science and Technology. He became the Secretary of State for Scientific and Technological Policy. He stayed in this role until March 2005.
Other Important Positions
After his government roles, Morenés worked in other areas:
- From March 2005 to June 2010, he was the secretary general of the Businessmen Association.
- In January 2009, he became the chairman of the Board of Directors for Construcciones Navales del Norte. He worked there until January 2011.
- From June 2010, he was chairman of MBDA Spain. This company makes missile systems.
- From January 2011, he also chaired Segur Ibérica. This is a private security company. He held both these roles until December 2011.
Minister of Defense
On December 21, 2011, Pedro Morenés was appointed Minister of Defense. In this role, he was in charge of Spain's military and national security. During his time as minister, he openly called Spain's involvement in the mission in Afghanistan a "war" in 2012. He served as Minister of Defense until November 4, 2016.
Ambassador to the United States
After his time as Minister of Defense, Pedro Morenés became the Ambassador of Spain to the United States of America. He started this role on March 25, 2017. He served as ambassador until September 8, 2018.
