The Peel County Courthouse is an old and important building in Brampton, Ontario. For many years, it was a place where legal cases were heard (a courthouse) and where people who broke the law were held (a jail). It was also the first meeting place for the Peel Regional Council, which helps run the Peel Region.

History of the Courthouse
Building the Courthouse
The Peel County Courthouse was built between 1865 and 1866. A talented architect named William Kauffman designed it. The building has a special look called Venetian Gothic style. It features a tall tower right in the middle of its roof. In 1867, a three-story jail was added to the back of the building.
Early Use and Council Meetings
The Peel County Council started holding their meetings in the courthouse in 1867. This council was like the local government for the area at that time. The courthouse served as the main center for the county's legal and government activities for many years.
Changes Over Time
The Peel County Council used the courthouse until 1973. After that, the building became the home of the Peel Regional Council from 1973 to 1980. The Regional Council then moved to a new location at 10 Peel Centre Drive.
For a while, the Peel Museum and Art Gallery used the building. Later, the old Peel County Jail and Registry Office next door were updated. These buildings, including the courthouse, became what was known as the Peel Heritage Complex. Today, it is called the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives, or PAMA for short.
Recent Renovations
Even after some updates in the 1990s, the courthouse part of the building was not open to the public every day. However, it went through a big renovation project. Now, it holds offices for staff, a meeting room, and a public library for the Art Gallery of Peel. The old Courtroom and Council Chamber are also available to rent for special events.
