The Pelham Library and Memorial Building is a historic building in Pelham, New Hampshire. It was built in 1895. This building was the town's very first dedicated library. It also serves as a special memorial for local military members.
The building was used as a library until 2003. Today, it is home to the Pelham Historical Society. This important building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. It was also listed on the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2008.
What the Building Looks Like
The old Pelham Library and Memorial Building is on the north side of Main Street. It sits next to the First Congregational Church, which was built in 1846. The church has a style called Greek Revival.
The library building is made of brick with wooden decorations. It has a hip roof and sits on a strong granite foundation. The front of the building has three main sections. The middle section sticks out a bit and has a triangular top, called a pediment.
The main entrance is set back in this middle section. It is under a rounded archway. The arch is decorated with bricks that stick out. The corners of the building also have special brickwork. The front windows are large and fixed. They have smaller windows above them, called transom windows.
A Look at Its History
The building was designed by an architect named Frederick W. Stickney. It was built between 1895 and 1896. The town helped pay for its construction.
One reason for building it was to celebrate Pelham's 150th anniversary. Another big reason was to create a proper home for the public library. Before this, the library had been in different places since it started in 1797.
The Pelham Library and Memorial Building was the town's only library building for many years. It served the community until 2003. That year, the library moved to a new building nearby. Now, this historic building is used by the Pelham Historical Society.
