The Pemaquid River is a lovely waterway located in the state of Maine, United States. It flows for about 11 miles (18 kilometers) from a place called Tobias Pond in Waldoboro. The river then travels south until it reaches Johns Bay in Bristol, Maine.

Journey of the Pemaquid River

The Pemaquid River starts its journey at Tobias Pond. From there, it makes its way to Johns Bay. The river's path can be measured from its mouth (where it meets the bay) all the way up to its source.

River Sections and Distances

The river flows through several interesting areas. Here are some key distances along its path, starting from Johns Bay:

  • From the mouth of Pemaquid Harbor to Route 130: This section is about 2.4 miles long.
  • From Route 130 to where the river leaves Biscay Pond: This part covers about 7.7 miles. So, from the harbor mouth, you've traveled about 10.1 miles.
  • Biscay Pond itself: This pond adds another 2.7 miles to the journey. This means you're now about 12.8 miles from the harbor mouth.
  • Pemaquid Pond: This large pond stretches for about 6.1 miles up to Route 1. When you reach this point, you've traveled almost 19 miles from the start!

Pemaquid River Watershed

A watershed is like a big bowl where all the rain and snowmelt collect and drain into a specific river or body of water. The Pemaquid River has its own watershed.

Size and Location of the Watershed

The Pemaquid River watershed is quite large. It covers parts of six different towns in Maine. The total area of this watershed is about 46.9 square miles. A small part of this area, about 5.4 square miles, is covered by water. The rest, about 41.5 square miles, is land.

What the Watershed Includes

The Pemaquid River watershed is made up of smaller areas called sub-watersheds. These smaller areas also drain into the Pemaquid River or into Pemaquid Harbor. For example, Little Falls Brook flows into Pemaquid Harbor. Beaver Dam Brook flows into Duckpuddle Pond, which is also part of this system.

The watershed also includes the coastline. This stretches down to Pemaquid Point on Johns Bay. This point is on the western side of the peninsula. The boundary of the Pemaquid River watershed goes over the tops of some hills. These include Johnston Hill and Cordwood Hill on the east side. It also includes Eugley Hill at the very northern tip. In total, the Pemaquid River watershed is home to 11 different ponds.
