Pen-y-fan Pond is a lake made by people, also called a reservoir. It was built a long time ago, between 1794 and 1796. This pond was an important part of a big building project for the Monmouthshire Canal. Its main job was to make sure the canal always had enough water.

About Pen-y-fan Pond

Pen-y-fan Pond is located in South Wales. It sits about 1,000 feet (305 meters) above sea level. The pond covers an area of about 6.7 hectares, which is like 14 football fields!

How the Pond Was Built

The pond was created by building a large dam. This dam is made mostly of earth, with stones on its sides. It forms banks around three sides of a gentle slope, holding the water in place.

Water leaves the pond through a special stone-lined, oval tunnel. This tunnel acts as a feeder, sending water to the canal. There's also a valve chamber built into the bank above the tunnel. This chamber helps control how much water flows out.
