Penfield Wallace Tate III (born May 19, 1956) is an American politician and lawyer. He has spent many years working in government and law, helping people and serving the public in Colorado.

Early Life and Education
Penfield Tate III was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Penfield Tate II, was in the United States military. Because of his father's job, young Penfield and his mother, Ellen, lived on different military bases when he was a child.
College and Law School
Penfield Tate III went to Colorado State University. He graduated in 1978 with a degree in sociology. Sociology is the study of how people live together in groups and societies. After college, he decided to study law. He attended the Antioch School of Law and finished his legal studies in 1981.
Career in Law and Public Service
After law school, Penfield Tate III became a lawyer in Denver. He worked for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC is a government agency that protects consumers and makes sure businesses play fair.
Working as a Lawyer
In 1984, Tate joined a law firm called Trimble, Tate & Nulan. His father was one of the people who started this firm. Later, he worked for Federico Peña, who was a public official. In 1992, Tate returned to his family's law firm. He then started his own law practice, Tate & Tate, P.C., with his father.
Stepping into Politics
Tate also worked for the Colorado Department of Administration. This department helps manage the state government's operations. From 1994 to 1996, he served as the vice chairman for the Colorado Democratic Party. This role meant he helped lead the Democratic political party in Colorado.
Serving in the State Legislature
In 1997, Penfield Tate III was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. He represented the eighth district. The House of Representatives is part of the state's law-making body. In 2000, he ran for a seat in the Colorado Senate, representing District 33. The State Senate is the other part of the state's law-making body.
Running for Mayor of Denver
In February 2003, Penfield Tate III decided to leave the state senate. He wanted to run for Mayor of Denver. The mayor is the top leader of a city.
Mayoral Campaigns
Tate was one of seven people who ran for mayor in the 2003 Denver mayoral election. He finished fourth in the first round of voting. This meant he did not move on to the final round, which was won by John Hickenlooper.
Years later, in October 2018, Tate announced he would run for mayor again. He was a candidate in the 2019 Denver mayoral election. Just like before, he placed fourth in the first round of votes.
Running for City Council
In 2023, Penfield Tate III ran for a seat on the Denver City Council. This council helps make decisions for the city of Denver. He ran for an "at-large" seat, which means he represented the entire city, not just one district. He finished third out of nine candidates in that election.
