Early Life and Education

Penfield Tate III's father, Penfield Tate II, was in the United States military. Because of this, young Penfield and his mother, Ellen, lived on different military bases when he was a child.

He later attended Colorado State University. In 1978, he earned a degree in sociology. After that, he studied law at the Antioch School of Law. He finished his legal studies in 1981.

Starting a Law Career

After law school, Tate began his career as an attorney. He worked in Denver for the Federal Trade Commission. This government agency helps protect consumers.

In 1984, Tate joined a law firm called Trimble, Tate & Nulan. His father was one of the people who started this firm. Tate also worked for Federico Peña from 1990 to 1991. Later, he led his own law practice, Tate & Tate, P.C., with his father.

Becoming a Politician

Before running for office, Tate worked for the Colorado Department of Administration. He also served as the vice chairman for the Colorado Democratic Party from 1994 to 1996.

Serving in the State Legislature

In 1997, Tate was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. He represented the eighth district. In 2000, he ran for a seat in the Colorado Senate. He won and represented District 33.

Running for Mayor of Denver

In February 2003, Tate left the state senate. He decided to run for mayor of Denver in the 2003 Denver mayoral election. He was one of seven people running for the job. He placed fourth in the first round of voting. This meant he did not move on to the final round. John Hickenlooper eventually won that election.

In October 2018, Tate announced he would run for mayor again. He ran in the 2019 Denver mayoral election. Once again, he placed fourth in the first round. In 2023, he ran for a seat on the Denver City Council. He placed third out of nine candidates in that election.
