Penllergaer Woods and Penllergare Estate
The beautiful Penllergaer Woods are next to the Parc Penllergaer housing area. These woods were once part of the large Penllergare estate. This estate belonged to a famous person named John Dillwyn Llewelyn. His big house, called a mansion, was surrounded by these woods.
Did you know that the very first photographs of the Moon were taken at Dillwyn Llewelyn's special observatory? This observatory is still standing today!
A small charity called the Penllergare Trust helps take care of the estate. They work hard on gardening, protecting nature, and keeping the area tidy. They also run a coffee shop on the grounds for visitors.
During World War II, a missionary named Rees Howells bought the estate. He offered the mansion as a home to Haile Selassie, who was the Emperor of Ethiopia and was living away from his country at the time.
