A woman named Ruth Kathleen Funkhouser Armstrong shared that the name "Penn Laird" comes from the middle names of two different fathers. One was William Penn Roudabush, who was the father of Harold Roudabush. The other was the father of Harold's wife, whose middle name was Laird. So, "Penn" and "Laird" were combined to give the community its name.
