History of Pennsville
How Pennsville Started
Pennsville was officially planned and laid out in 1828. This process is called "platting," which means someone drew up a map showing where the streets and lots would be. The community got its name from Penn Township, the area it's located in.
Early Settlers and Quakers
Many of the first people to settle in Pennsville were Quakers. Quakers are members of a Christian group known for their peaceful beliefs and simple way of life. They often built meeting houses for their gatherings. In 2017, the closest Quaker Meeting house was in a nearby town called Chesterhill.
The Pennsville Post Office
A post office opened in Pennsville on February 27, 1829. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. However, the post office eventually closed on October 29, 1988. After that, all the mail services for Pennsville were handled by the post office in Stockport, Ohio.
