The Story of Penobscot Theatre
How It All Began
The Penobscot Theatre Company has a cool history! It all started in 1973 when a person named George Vafiadis founded a group called the Acadia Repertory Company. This first company was the beginning of what would later become the Penobscot Theatre Company.
Growing into Penobscot Theatre
Ten years after it began, in 1983, the Acadia Repertory Company officially became the Penobscot Theatre Company. This was an exciting step, allowing the theatre to grow and bring even more performances to the community in Bangor.
Leaders Through the Years
Over the years, many talented people have helped lead the Penobscot Theatre Company. Joe Turner Cantu was the Artistic Director from 1990 to 1992. After him, Mark Torres became the Producing Artistic Director and stayed in that important role for 13 seasons, helping the theatre create many memorable shows.
Who Leads the Theatre Today?
As of June 2023, the Penobscot Theatre Company is led by two dedicated people. Jonathan Berry is the Artistic Director, who helps decide which plays to perform and guides the creative side of the theatre. Jen Shepard is the Executive Director, who manages the business side and makes sure everything runs smoothly. Together, they help the Penobscot Theatre Company continue to bring great stories to the stage in Bangor.
