History of Penton
How Penton Got Its Name
Long ago, a man named William Penton received about 500 acres of land from John Fenwick. William and Daniel Penton lived on part of this land. Over time, the area was named after a member of the Penton family, either Daniel or Abner. It was called different names like Penton Abbey and Pentonville before becoming just Penton.
Around 1795, a man named Burton Penton lived there. His granddaughter later suggested the name Penton when a post office was opened in the village.
Early Industries in Penton
Penton was once famous for its brickyards. A brickyard is a place where bricks are made, usually from clay. Some of the first brickyards in Penton were started by Jacob Thackra, John Bee, and Smith B. Sickler. These businesses helped the community grow.
Penton's Early Residents
In 1834, a survey was done in Penton. This survey showed that many of the people living in the town at that time were African Americans.
