How the Spice Business Began
The story of Penzeys Spices started in 1957. William Penzey Sr. and Ruth Ann Penzey opened a business. They sold coffee and spices in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their store was called The Spice House.
Their son, William Penzey Jr., who people called Bill, started working there. He helped out from a young age. Over time, The Spice House began to focus only on selling spices.
Bill Penzey's Own Spice Journey
In 1986, Bill Penzey Jr. decided to start his own business. He was 22 years old at the time. He began selling spices through a catalog. This meant people could order spices from a book.
His new business grew steadily over the years. In 1994, Penzeys opened its very first retail store. This was a place where people could walk in and buy spices. By 2013, there were 69 Penzeys stores. These stores were located all across North America.
Changes in Store Locations
In 2012, Penzeys had 67 stores. These stores were spread across 29 different states. In March 2020, the company announced some changes. They had to close some stores because of the COVID-19 pandemic. By June 2021, the number of Penzeys stores had become 53.
