What is the People's National Assembly?
The People's National Assembly is the "lower house" of Algeria's Parliament. This means it's one of the two main groups that make laws for the country. Its members work to create new laws, change old ones, and discuss important issues that affect everyone in Algeria.
Who Are the Members?
There are 462 members in the People's National Assembly. These members are elected by the people of Algeria. A small number of these seats, 8 to be exact, are set aside for Algerians who live in other countries around the world. This makes sure that Algerians living abroad also have a voice in their home country's government.
How Members Are Chosen
Members of the People's National Assembly are chosen through a process called proportional representation. This means that political parties get a number of seats that is similar to the percentage of votes they receive. People vote directly for these members. Once elected, a member serves for five years.
Who Can Be a Member?
To become a member of the People's National Assembly, a person must be at least 28 years old. This age requirement ensures that those who serve in this important role have enough life experience.
