Pepperwood is a small, quiet place in Humboldt County, California. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a settled area, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Pepperwood is located about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northwest of Redcrest. It sits at an elevation of 115 feet (35 meters) above sea level. This community is the very first one you'll find when traveling north along the famous Avenue of the Giants.
Discovering Pepperwood
Pepperwood was once called Barkdull. It's a place with a long history, especially concerning its post office. A post office helped people send and receive mail. Pepperwood had a post office open from 1887 to 1892. It then reopened from 1901 until 1965.
A Look Back at History
Pepperwood has faced some big challenges over the years. The community experienced serious floods. One major flood happened in 1955. But an even bigger disaster struck during the Christmas flood of 1964. This flood was so powerful that it almost completely destroyed the town.
Before the 1964 flood, Pepperwood was home to about 300 people. It was an important area for growing farm produce. This means many local farms grew fruits and vegetables.

Even after the big floods, Pepperwood still exists. Today, you can find a few farms and homes there. It remains a peaceful spot along the scenic Avenue of the Giants.
