Pepsi Next was a fizzy cola drink made by PepsiCo. It was a special kind of Pepsi that is not sold anymore. It was made to have less sugar than regular Pepsi but more than diet sodas.
In some places, Pepsi Next used different kinds of sweeteners like sugar and some artificial ones. It was for people who liked the taste of regular Pepsi but wanted less sugar. It was also for those who did not like the taste of diet drinks like Diet Pepsi or Pepsi Max.
For a while, Pepsi Next in the U.S. did not have a sweetener called aspartame. This sweetener is found in many diet drinks. Even without aspartame, this version of Pepsi Next still had other artificial sweeteners. In other countries, like Canada and Australia, Pepsi Next used a natural sweetener called stevia. This version had 30% less sugar and no artificial sweeteners.
How Pepsi Next Was Created
Before Pepsi Next, Pepsi tried another drink called Pepsi Edge. It was their first cola with fewer calories. Pepsi Edge came out in 2004 but was stopped after only two years.
Later, around the late 2000s, PepsiCo became interested again in drinks with fewer calories. They released G2, a version of Gatorade with less than half the calories. In 2011, they also launched Trop50, a juice blend with 50% fewer calories.
In 2007, PepsiCo applied for trademarks for "Pepsi Next" and "Diet Pepsi Next." This was a step towards creating the new drink.
Testing the New Drink
In 2010, PepsiCo started testing Pepsi Next with groups of people. They wanted to see what people thought of it. In June 2011, PepsiCo announced that Pepsi Next would be tested in two cities: Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
After these tests, PepsiCo officially launched Pepsi Next on February 27, 2012. In Australia, Pepsi Next was made by Schweppes Australia. It used stevia to reduce the sugar content by 30% compared to regular Pepsi. Pepsi Next also came out in France in March 2013. It then launched in Finland and Canada in March 2014. All these countries used stevia extract in their Pepsi Next drinks.
Advertising Pepsi Next
After Pepsi Next was launched, a television commercial was shown. It featured a young couple enjoying the new drink.
Famous people like Eva Longoria, Paula Patton, and Nicki Minaj appeared in ads for Pepsi Next. Paula Patton and Nicki Minaj both filmed TV commercials for the drink.
There were also ads online and in print. These ads showed a picture of a Pepsi Next can with the words: Real Cola Taste, 60% Less Sugar, Drink It To Believe It.
During the 2013 Super Bowl, Pepsi used its advertising time to promote Pepsi Next. This happened right before the halftime show, which featured Beyoncé. Beyoncé was a "brand ambassador" for Pepsi at the time. Pepsi also asked customers to send in their photos before the Super Bowl. These photos were then shown during the halftime show and in the ads.
