José Vicente "Pepu" Hernández Fernández (born on February 11, 1958) is a Spanish former professional basketball coach. He is well-known for leading basketball teams to big wins.

Pepu Hernández's Coaching Career

Pepu Hernández has had a long and successful career coaching basketball. He worked with both club teams and the Spanish national team.

Coaching Club Teams

Pepu Hernández spent many years as the head coach for a team called CB Estudiantes. While coaching Estudiantes, he helped them win the Spanish Basketball King's Cup in 2000. This is a major basketball tournament in Spain.

In 2004, he was also named the AEEB Coach of the Year. This award recognized him as the best basketball coach in Spain that year.

Coaching the Spanish National Team

From 2006 to 2008, Pepu Hernández was the head coach for the senior Spain men's national basketball team. This is the team that represents Spain in international competitions.

Under his coaching, the Spanish team achieved great success:

  • They won the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. This is a huge worldwide tournament for national basketball teams.
  • They won the silver medal at the EuroBasket 2007. This is a major European basketball championship.

Pepu Hernández's Political Life

After his basketball coaching career, Pepu Hernández decided to enter politics. In 2019, he ran for a political position in Madrid, Spain. He wanted to become the mayor of Madrid.

He was chosen by the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party to be their candidate. He ran in the election for mayor but did not win. He finished in fourth place.

Pepu Hernández is not the only former Spanish national basketball team coach to enter politics. Another coach, Javier Imbroda, also became involved in politics in Spain.
