Early Life and Family
Vidar Wexelsen was born in a place called Overhalla in Norway. His father, Vilhelm Andreas Wexelsen, was a vicar (a type of priest), a politician, and later became a bishop. His mother was Anna Beata Nilssen. Vidar was related to some well-known people: Gunnar Jahn was his cousin, and Karl Evang was his nephew.
Vidar spent much of his childhood in Kristiania (which is now called Oslo). This was because his father worked in the Norwegian Parliament (the Storting) and was part of the government. From 1905 to 1909, his father was a bishop in Trondheim.
Vidar chose the artist name Per Kvist. He did this partly out of respect for his well-known family. He was married twice. In 1919, he married Kally Bachke. They later divorced in 1931. In 1932, he married actress Sigrun Svenningsen. Even though he was famous as Per Kvist, he preferred to be called Vidar Wexelsen by his friends and family. He passed away from cancer in 1947.
Career Highlights
Vidar Wexelsen started his career in theater. From 1909 to 1910, he was a student at the Fahlstrøms Theater. After that, he worked as a sailor for two years. He also spent some time as a clerk at a railway office.
While working as a salesman, Vidar also edited a funny magazine called Tyrihans. He started writing songs for Bokken Lasson's cabaret, Chat Noir. A cabaret is a place where people perform songs, comedy, and dances. From 1916, he worked at Chat Noir as an actor and writer. This is when he began using the name Per Kvist.
Songs and Revues
Per Kvist published a collection of songs called 16 cabaretviser in 1920. In 1922, he wrote his first revue, Midt i planeten, with Arne Svendsen. He released another song collection, Tolv viser, in 1923.
Some of his popular songs include "En Oslodag," which he wrote with composer Kristian Hauger. Another famous song was "Å blei d'a dei (din blei)?" from the 1925 revue Summetonen. This song helped make Lalla Carlsen a very famous performer.
Children's Books and Films
In the 1920s, Per Kvist wrote several books for children. These books were based on his own childhood experiences. Some of his children's books include:
- Glade gutteår (1925)

- Nils dekksgutt (1927)
- Den røde hånds liga (1929)
From 1927 to 1929, he ran his own cabaret called To Små Kroner. In the 1930s, he worked at Chat Noir again. From 1942 to 1947, he wrote revues for the Edderkoppen Theatre. This included their very first revue, Saker og ting. One of his later songs was "Optimisten og pessimisten."
Per Kvist also appeared in small roles in several films during the 1920s and 1930s. He played the character "Elias" in the movie Fantegutten (1932). He also played "Mathias" in De vergeløse (1939). In 1946, he wrote a children's comedy play called Pers fødselsdag.
