Peralta massacre facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Peralta massacre is a famous old story about a Mexican family, the Peraltas, who were supposedly attacked by Apache people around 1848. This story is often told as part of the bigger legend of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine, a hidden treasure that many people have searched for.

There are many different versions of the Peralta story, but they usually share some key details. People say that during the 1840s, the Peralta family found and developed very rich gold mines in the Superstition Mountains in what is now Arizona. In 1848, a large group from the Peralta family was supposedly traveling back to Mexico with a lot of gold. During their journey, they were ambushed by Apaches. The story claims that almost everyone in the Peralta group was killed, except for a few family members who managed to escape. According to the legend, the Apaches then buried the gold and hid the mine.

However, it's important to know that this is a legend, not a proven historical event. A historian named Robert Blair has stated that the Peralta massacre likely never happened. It's a popular tale that has grown over time.

Searching for the Lost Mine

The author T.E. Glover wrote a book called The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz. In his book, he mentions a U.S. Cavalry soldier named William Edwards. Edwards was supposedly present when the bodies of the people from the alleged massacre were found. The story goes that William Edwards, and later his son, spent much of their lives trying to find the lost gold mine mentioned in the legend. Many people have been fascinated by this mystery for generations.

The Peralta Story in Movies

The story of the Peralta massacre has even appeared in movies. For example, it is shown in a flashback scene in the 1949 film Lust for Gold. This movie starred famous actors like Glenn Ford and Ida Lupino.
