Perpendicular Point facts for kids
Perpendicular Point is a cool spot on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It's a type of landform called a headland, which is like a piece of land sticking out into the sea. From here, you can look out over the big Tasman Sea.
This point is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Cape Foulwind. It's also close to a small community called Te Miko.
A Special Place for Birds
Perpendicular Point is known as an Important Bird Area (IBA). This means it's a very special place for birds, recognized by a group called BirdLife International. These areas are important because they provide a safe home for many bird species.
The tall cliffs around Perpendicular Point are a perfect breeding spot. More than 500 pairs of spotted shags come here to build their nests and raise their young. These birds love to live and breed on the rocky coastlines.
