The Perry Farm is a very old and important farm in Riley Hill, North Carolina. This area is close to the city of Raleigh. The farm has been kept in its original condition for many years.
The main farmhouse was built in 1820. It was built by John and Nancy Perry. They were white landowners who used enslaved people to work on their farm. This was during a time in American history called the Antebellum period. This period was before the Civil War.
A New Start After the Civil War
The American Civil War ended in 1865. After the war, many enslaved people became free. One of these freed people was named Feggins Perry. He used to be enslaved on the Perry Farm.
Feggins Perry made a deal with his former enslavers. He became a tenant farmer on the land. This meant he rented the land to farm it. He would pay the owners with a share of his crops.
Feggins worked very hard. Every night after farming, he made baskets and furniture. He sold these items to earn extra money. His main goal was to buy land for himself and his brother. Owning land was a big dream for many freed people.
Feggins Perry also helped start the nearby Riley Hill Baptist Church. This church was an important place for the freed community.
A Family's Legacy
In 1914, Feggins Perry's son, Guyon Perry, bought the Perry Farm. This was a huge achievement for the family. It meant they now owned the land they had worked on for so long.
The farm has stayed in the Perry family ever since. It is a symbol of their hard work and determination.
A Special Place in History
The Perry Farm is very important for understanding African-American history. It shows how families worked to build new lives after slavery. It also shows their efforts to own land and create communities.
Because of its importance, the Perry Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 1994. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the farm for future generations.
