What is Perryton's Story?

Early Days of Perryton

Perryton got its start a long time ago. In 1836, a post office was opened there. This was a really important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing down in 1905.

How Perryton Got Its Name

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Perryton, just like the larger area called Perry Township, was named after a famous American hero: Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. He was a brave naval officer who fought in the War of 1812. One of his most famous victories was the Battle of Lake Erie. Naming the community after him was a way to honor his achievements.
