Gamnip-cha (Hangul: 감잎차), also known as persimmon leaf tea, is a special drink from Korea. It's a type of traditional Korean tea made from the dried leaves of the Oriental persimmon tree. This tree is famous for its sweet, orange fruit.

What is Persimmon Leaf Tea?

Persimmon leaf tea is a healthy herbal tea. It's made by carefully preparing the leaves of the persimmon tree. People in Korea have enjoyed this tea for a long time. It's known for its unique taste and is a popular drink.

How is it Made?

Making gamnip-cha is a careful process.

  • First, young persimmon leaves are picked in May or June. This is when they are fresh and full of good things.
  • Next, the leaves are washed very well.
  • Then, they are dried in the shade for about two to three days. This helps them dry slowly and keep their natural goodness.
  • After drying, the leaves are usually cut into small pieces.
  • These pieces are then steamed. Steaming helps to bring out the flavors.
  • Finally, the steamed leaves are dried again. This makes them ready to be stored and used for tea.

How to Enjoy Your Tea

To make a cup of persimmon leaf tea, you need just a few steps.

  • Take about 2 to 3 grams of the dried persimmon leaves. That's a very small amount!
  • Heat 100 milliliters of water until it boils.
  • Let the boiled water cool down to about 70 degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit). This is important for the best taste.
  • Pour the warm water over the leaves and let them steep for 15 minutes. This allows the flavors to mix with the water.
  • For a special touch, you can add a drop of maesil-ju (which is plum liquor) or yuja-cheong (a type of yuja marmalade). These additions can give the tea a sweet or tangy flavor.
