Peshawar Division facts for kids
Peshawar Division (Urdu: دوسوں پشاور) was an important administrative area in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Think of it like a large region that helped manage smaller areas within it. This system was used until the year 2000, when the government changed how these regions were organized.
When Pakistan became an independent country in 1947, the North-West Frontier Province (which is now called Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) was divided into two main parts: Dera Ismail Khan and Peshawar. Over time, some parts of Peshawar Division, like Hazara and Kohat, grew big enough to become their own separate divisions in 1976.
A Look Back: History of Peshawar Division
Peshawar Division has a long and interesting history. Before Pakistan became independent, this area was part of British India. Back then, it was known as the North-West Frontier Province.
Originally, Peshawar was a large district within this province. A district is a smaller administrative area. This large district was further divided into even smaller parts called tehsils. Tehsils are like sub-districts, helping to manage local areas.
The five main tehsils that made up the Peshawar district were:
- Peshawar
- Charsadda
- Mardan
- Swabi
- Nowshera
After Pakistan gained its independence in 1947, the tehsil of Peshawar became a new district. At the same time, the larger old district of Peshawar was upgraded to become a "division." This meant it became a bigger administrative unit, overseeing several districts. The Peshawar Division continued to play a key role in the region's administration until the government reforms in 2000.
