Peter Bently is a British writer who creates fun books for children. He was born in 1960. He is famous for his rhyming picture books. Some of his well-known books include The Great Dog Bottom Swap and The Shark in the Dark.
His books have won many awards. For example, Octopus Shocktopus won the 2022 Children's Book Award (UK). Another book, Cats Ahoy!, won the Roald Dahl Funny Prize in 2011. King Jack and the Dragon was also named a special book by the American Library Association.
About Peter Bently
Peter Bently was born in 1960 in a town called Tidworth, in England. His father was an army bandmaster. Because of his father's job, Peter grew up in many different places.
He lived in England, Germany, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He went to ten different schools as he grew up!
His Journey to Writing
After school, Peter studied languages at Oxford University. Then, he worked as a journalist, writing for newspapers and magazines. Later, he became an editor and writer for illustrated reference books. These books often had lots of pictures and facts.
In 2008, Peter published his very first picture book for children. It was called A Lark in the Ark. Since then, he has written over seventy books!
Recent Works and Awards
Peter Bently continues to write many popular books. His book Octopus Shocktopus won the Teach Early Years picture book award in 2020. It was also considered for other big awards in 2022.
Other recent books include Dogs in Disguise and The King’s Birthday Suit!. Peter lives in London with his wife, Lucy Curtin. Lucy is an actor and also teaches drama.
