Peter DuConge (born in 1902, died in 1966) was an American jazz musician. He was known for playing instruments like the clarinet and saxophone. Peter was an important part of the early New Orleans jazz music scene.

Early Life and Musical Family

Peter DuConge grew up in a very musical family. His father was a barber who had a deep, singing voice. His mother, Daniska, was a soprano singer. She taught piano lessons and made sure her children learned music.

Peter had three brothers who also became professional musicians. Adolphus DuConge played the piano. Albert DuConge was a trumpeter. Earl DuConge played the tenor saxophone. Music was a big part of their family life.

Starting in New Orleans

As a young musician, Peter DuConge played in local clubs in New Orleans. Some of these clubs included the Elite Club and Tom Anderson's. He often played with other talented musicians, like Alex Bigard, who was one of his bandmates.

Moving to New York and Europe

In the mid-1920s, Peter DuConge started playing music on riverboats. These boats traveled along the Mississippi River. After that, he moved to New York City. In New York, he played with groups like the Jim Dandies and Vaughn's Lucky Sambo Orchestra.

He later joined Bill Brown and His Brownies. He played alongside another musician named Ovie Alston. Peter also traveled to Europe. He toured as a member of Leon Abbey's orchestra, sharing his music with audiences overseas.

Playing with Famous Musicians

Peter DuConge often had the chance to work with the legendary musician Louis Armstrong. In 1932, Peter was part of Armstrong's band. They went on tours together in England and other parts of Europe from 1933 to 1934.

He also played with Leon Abbey again in 1934 while in the Netherlands. Peter performed with other famous jazz artists too. These included Coleman Hawkins and Benny Peyton during his time in Europe. In 1939, when World War II began, Peter DuConge returned to the United States.
