Peter Pan is a popular American brand of peanut butter. It's sold by Post Consumer Brands, which is part of Post Holdings. The brand is named after the famous J. M. Barrie character. It first came out in 1920 as "E. K. Pond" and was renamed Peter Pan in 1928.

History of Peter Pan Peanut Butter

In 1921, a person named Joseph L. Rosefield created a special way to make peanut butter. This method kept the oil from separating. He got a patent for his idea and let Derby Foods use it. Derby Foods was a company owned by Swift & Company.

At first, Peter Pan peanut butter came in a tin can. It had a special key to open it and a lid that could be closed again. During World War II, there wasn't enough metal. Because of this, the company started putting the peanut butter in glass jars instead. In 1988, Peter Pan was the very first peanut butter brand to be sold in plastic jars.

Peter Pan peanut butter was also used in a candy product. It was the main ingredient in Peter Pan Peanut Butter Cups. These were made by the Frankford Candy & Chocolate Company, but they are not sold anymore.

On December 8, 2020, a company called Conagra announced that it would sell the Peter Pan brand. It was sold to Post Holdings. This sale was completed on January 25, 2021.

Peter Pan Promotions and Mascots

Over the years, many famous people have helped promote Peter Pan peanut butter. These people are called spokesmen. Some of them include actor Sterling Holloway and comedian Alan Sues. Game show host Art James and actor Mark Linn-Baker also helped promote the brand.

In 2007, it was announced that the Disney version of the Peter Pan character would become the official mascot for Peter Pan Peanut Butter. Other characters from Disney's 1953 animated movie were also planned to appear in new ads. This wasn't the first time Disney characters worked with Peter Pan. In the mid-1950s, Peter Pan helped sponsor ABC's Disneyland TV show. During that time, Tinker Bell often appeared in their advertisements.

In some older versions of the product, the Peter Pan character on the label looked like a woman dressed in a Peter Pan costume, not a boy.

In early 2007, Peter Pan peanut butter and some Great Value brand peanut butters were involved in a safety issue. These products were linked to cases of salmonellosis across the United States. Salmonellosis is an illness caused by bacteria called Salmonella. Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believed this was the first time a Salmonella outbreak in the U.S. was linked to peanut butter.

The company decided to recall the affected products. This recall included Peter Pan and some Great Value peanut butter that had a product code starting with "2111". The recall covered all peanut butter made by ConAgra and sold in the United States since October 2004. After the company made sure the products were safe, Peter Pan peanut butter returned to stores in late August 2007.
