Early Life and Family
Sir Peter Probie was born in Chester. He was the second son of Ralph Probie and Alice Bernard. When Peter was young, his family moved to Brampton, Cambridgeshire. His mother's family, the Bernards, were well-known landowners in that area.
Peter's older brother, Ralph, passed away in 1605 without having children. Because of this, Peter inherited the family's land and properties.
Career and Public Service
Peter Probie was a member of the Worshipful Company of Barber-Surgeons. These "Worshipful Companies" were like powerful trade guilds or associations in London. He even worked as a barber for a famous government official named Francis Walsingham.
Sir Peter's career advanced thanks to the support of Sir Thomas Heneage, who was a powerful figure at the time. Peter even named his oldest son Heneage, showing his respect.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1593, Peter Probie was chosen as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston upon Hull. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the House of Commons. He was elected again in 1597, this time for Liverpool.
Roles in London City Government
Sir Peter Probie held many important positions in the City of London:
- On May 10, 1614, he was elected an alderman for Queenhithe ward. An alderman was a senior member of the city's governing council.
- He served as Sheriff of London from 1614 to 1615. The Sheriffs were important officials responsible for law and order in the city.
- In 1615, he became the Master of the Barber-Surgeons Company, leading his trade guild.
- From 1616 to 1622, he was the Governor of the Irish Society, an organization involved in developing land in Ireland.
- In 1622, he joined a different powerful guild, the Worshipful Company of Grocers.
- Later that year, he was elected Lord Mayor of London, the highest position in the city's government.
- He was given the title of Knight on June 8, 1623, becoming "Sir" Peter Probie.
- Also in 1623, he became an alderman for Broad Street.
Family Life
Sir Peter Probie married Elizabeth Thoroughgood. She was the daughter of John Thoroughgood from Chivers, Essex, and had been married before to Edward Henson.
Sir Peter and Elizabeth had five sons, including their eldest, Heneage, and one daughter. Their marriage was a happy one. When Sir Peter passed away, he made sure Elizabeth was well taken care of financially. Elizabeth died in 1644.
