Peter Watson was born in Kingston upon Hull in 1761. He was baptized there on August 26. He went to Hull grammar school. After school, he became a merchant, which means he bought and sold goods for a living.
Peter Watson had many other interests! He loved studying plants (botany), insects (entomology), and rocks (mineralogy). He was also good at chemistry and enjoyed painting landscapes. He would travel all over the East Riding of Yorkshire in his gig (a type of small carriage) to find and study plants.

Peter Watson passed away in Cottingham, near Hull, on September 1, 1830.
Peter Watson's Famous Book
Between 1824 and 1825, Peter Watson published a very important book. It was called Dendrologia Britannica; or Trees and Shrubs that will live in the Open Air of Britain throughout the year. This book came out in 24 parts and was later put together into two volumes.
A famous writer named John Claudius Loudon said it was "the most scientific work devoted exclusively to trees which has hitherto been published in England." This means it was considered the best book about trees at that time in England.
The book included an introduction to how to describe plants. It also had 172 beautiful colored pictures of trees and shrubs from other countries. Each picture came with a detailed description.
