Peter of Castile was a Spanish prince, known as an infante. He was born in June 1260 in Seville. His parents were Alfonso X of Castile, who was the King of Castile, and Violant of Aragon, also called Yolanda.
Peter held several important titles. He was the Lord (señor) of places like Ledesma, Alba de Tormes, Salvatierra, Miranda del Castañar, Galisteo, and Granadilla. He died on October 10, 1283, in Ledesma, when he was just 23 years old.
Life as a Prince
Peter played a role in the military actions of his time. His father, King Alfonso X, put him in charge of Christian troops during a battle. This was the Siege of Algeciras (1278–79), which was not successful.
In 1281, Peter also joined his father's military campaign. This campaign was against the Kingdom of Granada.
Family and Succession
Peter's older brother was Ferdinand de la Cerda. Ferdinand was the Crown Prince, meaning he was supposed to become king after their father. However, Ferdinand died before King Alfonso X.
After Ferdinand's death, Peter supported his other brother, Sancho IV of Castile. This was against their father's wishes. King Alfonso X had wanted Ferdinand's son, Alfonso de la Cerda, to be his successor. Because Peter supported Sancho, his father removed him from his will. This meant Peter would not inherit anything from his father.
Marriage and Family
In 1281, Peter of Castile married Margaret of Narbonne. She was the daughter of Aimery IV of Narbonne. Margaret belonged to the House of Lara, an important noble family.
Peter and Margaret had one son:
- Sancho de Castilla el de la Paz. He passed away in 1312 and did not have any children.
Peter also had another son, who was born outside of marriage. His name was Sancho Pérez.
