Peter of Hispania (also known as Latin: Petrus Hispanus) was a very important thinker from the 1200s. He wrote a famous textbook called Summulae Logicales. This book taught about Aristotelian logic, which is a way of thinking and reasoning.

Many people believe Peter of Hispania was the same person as Peter Juliani. Peter Juliani was a scholar from Portugal. He later became Pope John XXI in 1276. However, some people, especially from Spain, think the author was a different person. They believe he was a Dominican friar from Castile.

Life of Peter of Hispania

We don't know many details about Peter of Hispania's early life. It is thought that he studied under a teacher named John Pagus. His teachings and writings became very influential across Europe.

His Ideas on Logic

Peter of Hispania's book, Summulae Logicales, was a huge success. It was used in universities all over Europe for hundreds of years. It helped students learn how to think clearly and logically.

He also wrote another important book about logic called Syncategoreumata. This book explored more complex ideas about words and their meanings in arguments.

Peter of Hispania believed that logic was super important. He once wrote: "Logic is the art of all arts, the science of all sciences. It helps us find the basic rules for everything. Only logic can truly discuss the rules of all other sciences. So, to learn any other science, logic must come first." This shows how much he valued clear thinking.

He also supported a review of teaching at the University of Paris. This review led to the Condemnation of 1277. This was a decision by the bishop of Paris to speak out against some ideas from Aristotle. These ideas seemed to go against the church's teachings at the time.

He also wrote Treasury of The Poor (Thesaurus Pauperum). This was a helpful guide for doctors. It listed many diseases and suggested different ways to treat them. This book was like a medical handbook for people who might not have had much money.
