Petersville is a small, unincorporated community in Clinton County, Iowa. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government like a city or town. It's a quiet spot in the U.S. state of Iowa.
A Look Back at Petersville
Petersville wasn't always called Petersville! It was first known as Quigley. The name changed to honor John Peters and his family. They were some of the first people to settle in this area.
The community was officially planned out in 1902. This planning process is called "platting." It means they drew up maps showing where streets and lots would be.
A post office opened here in 1883 when it was still called Quigley. It was renamed Petersville in 1902, just like the community. However, this post office closed its doors in 1935.
Petersville was a bit bigger in the past. In 1925, about 55 people lived there. By 1940, the population had become smaller, with only 28 residents.
