Petrus Torkilsson (also known as Petrus Tyrgilli in Latin) was an important church leader in Sweden during the 1300s. He served as the Bishop of Linköping from 1342 to 1351. After that, he became the Archbishop of Uppsala from 1351 until his death in 1366. The Archbishop of Uppsala was the highest church position in Sweden at that time.
Early Life and First Steps
We don't know exactly when Petrus Torkilsson was born. The first time he is mentioned in history records is in the year 1320. At that time, he was working as a vicar in a place called Färentuna. A vicar is a type of priest who manages a local church.
Working with the King
Petrus Torkilsson became a very important person in the Swedish government. In 1340, he was named the chancellor for King Magnus Eriksson. A chancellor is a high-ranking official who advises the king and helps manage the country's affairs.
Petrus Torkilsson remained loyal to King Magnus Eriksson for many years. He continued to support the king even during difficult times. This included the civil wars that happened in Sweden during the 1360s. Civil wars are conflicts between different groups within the same country.
