Petworth Cottage Museum facts for kids
The Petworth Cottage Museum is a special place located at 346 High Street in Petworth, West Sussex, England. It used to be a home for a worker from the Leconfield Estate, which was a large area of land owned by a wealthy family. Today, the cottage has been carefully brought back to look just like it did around 1910.
In 1910, a woman named Mrs. Mary Cummings lived there. She was from Ireland and worked as a seamstress, which means she sewed clothes. Mary worked both at the grand Petworth House nearby and from her own home. The museum also has two old paintings. These paintings show the outside and inside of the Petworth Gaol, which was a type of prison, back in the 1860s.
About the Museum
How the Museum Started
The Petworth Cottage Museum first opened its doors in May 1996. Lord and Lady Egremont, who are part of the family that owns Petworth House, helped to open it.
Who Runs the Museum
The museum is managed by a group called the Petworth Cottage Trust. This is a charity, which means it's a non-profit organization. People who volunteer their time help visitors learn about the cottage. They share information and give tours to everyone who comes to visit.
