What is Phalanx?

Phalanx is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger area called a township. It's known for its interesting past, especially a unique community that once thrived there.

A Unique History

The story of Phalanx goes back many years. A post office was first opened in Phalanx in 1872. It helped people send and receive mail for about 30 years, closing down in 1902. The name "Phalanx" comes from a special group of people who lived there long ago.

The Trumbull Phalanx Company

The community was named after the Trumbull Phalanx Company. This was a type of group called a utopian community. A utopian community is a place where people try to create a perfect society. They often share resources and work together based on certain ideas.

This particular community was active from 1844 to 1848, and then again from 1849 to 1852. It was based on the ideas of a French thinker named Charles Fourier. He believed that people could live together in harmony and work happily if they organized themselves in a specific way.

Life in the Community

About 200 people lived in the Trumbull Phalanx community. They had a lot of land, covering up to 2,000 acres. This land was used for many different activities.

The residents had farms where they grew food. They also had several mills, like a grist mill for grinding grain and a saw mill for cutting wood. There was even an oil mill and a place where they made clothes. These businesses helped the community support itself and live together.
