What Does It Look Like?
Carolina canarygrass is an annual grass. This means it completes its whole life cycle, from seed to flower to seed, in just one year. It can grow quite tall, reaching between 1 and 1.5 meters (about 3 to 5 feet) high.
The plant has a fuzzy flower cluster called an inflorescence. This part holds the seeds. It looks a bit like an oval and can be up to 7 centimeters (about 3 inches) long and 2 centimeters (less than an inch) wide.

Long ago, this grass was an important food source for ancient people in North America. It was part of what historians call the Eastern Agricultural Complex. This was a group of plants that early Native Americans grew for food.
Scientists have found grains of Carolina canarygrass at old archaeological sites. These sites are places where people lived thousands of years ago. The grains have been found in areas from Texas to Indiana and Alabama, some dating back 4,000 years!
