Phantom of the Megaplex is a fun comedy mystery movie made by the Disney Channel in 2000. It's a Disney Channel Original Movie! The story is very loosely inspired by an old book called The Phantom of the Opera.
The film is about strange things happening at a huge movie theater. This happens on the night of a big movie premiere party. The movie being shown is called Midnight Mayhem.
The main character is Pete Riley, played by Taylor Handley. He is 17 years old and works as the assistant manager of the theater. Pete has to deal with broken equipment and staff disappearing. He also has a broken popcorn machine, which is a big problem! Pete tries to figure out if these troubles are just bad luck. Or, is someone secretly trying to ruin things? He wonders if a mysterious "phantom" is behind it all.
Plot
Pete Riley is 17 and loves his job as assistant manager. He works at a huge 26-screen movie theater called a megaplex. People say the megaplex is haunted by a "phantom." This phantom is supposedly someone trapped in the old theater that was torn down to build the new one.
Pete, his boss Shawn MacGibbon, and other workers are getting ready. They are preparing for a big premiere of the new movie Midnight Mayhem. Wolfgang Nedermayer, who owns the megaplex, will be there. Pete is disappointed because he has to bring his younger siblings. Karen is 13 and Brian is 10. Their mom is going on a date with her boyfriend, George.
Pete drops his siblings off to watch a movie. Karen sneaks away to watch a scary movie with her friends. Pete needs to focus on setting up the premiere. But problems start happening all over the megaplex. Other movies begin to have strange accidents. Karen and Brian notice that these accidents match the movie titles. For example, a movie called Cyclone Summer gets a giant fan in front of the screen. This blows everyone out of their seats!
Pete, Karen, and Brian work together. They realize the phantom is causing all these problems. Brian and Karen find online spoilers for the movie. This helps Pete stop the phantom from ruining the premiere. The phantom is revealed to be Shawn, the senior manager. Nedermayer immediately fires Shawn. Shawn gets very angry. He says he did all this so Nedermayer would finally notice him. Nedermayer never even got his name right!
The director of Midnight Mayhem then offers Shawn a deal. He wants to make a movie about Shawn's actions. It would be called Phantom of the Megaplex: The Shawn McGibbon Story. Nedermayer offers Pete the job of senior manager. This is what Pete always wanted. But Pete turns down the job. He tells Nedermayer he would be honored, but he realizes something important.
Helping Karen and Brian find the phantom made Pete think. He realizes how important his childhood is. He doesn't want to waste it anymore. Pete asks for the rest of the night off. Nedermayer agrees and gives Pete money. He wants Pete to treat his girlfriend, Caitlin Kerrigan, to breakfast. George proposes to Julie, Pete's mom. Brian suggested this, saying a "4-star ending" was needed. As everyone goes into the theater, Movie Mason talks to Brian. He says he never believed in the Phantom of the Megaplex. But he adds, "the Werewolf of the Megaplex is another story." They both go into the theater. An employee named "Scary Terri" closes the doors. A wolf howl sounds, ending the movie.
