Pharnaces (Greek: Φαρνάκης) is the name of several important historical figures from ancient times. These men were often powerful leaders, governors, or kings in different parts of the ancient world, especially in the Persian Empire and the Kingdom of Pontus.

Who Were the Pharnaces?

The name Pharnaces belonged to several notable individuals. Each played a role in the history of their time, often as rulers or military leaders. Understanding who they were helps us learn about ancient empires and kingdoms.

Pharnaces, Founder of the Pharnacid Dynasty

This Pharnaces lived a very long time ago, from about 550 BCE to 497 BCE. He was the founder of an important family known as the Pharnacid dynasty. This family ruled a region called Hellespontine Phrygia.

Pharnaces served as a satrap, which was like a governor in the vast Persian Empire. Satraps were powerful officials who managed provinces for the Persian king. Pharnaces helped establish his family's influence in this region for many years.

Pharnaces II of Phrygia

Another Pharnaces, also a satrap of Hellespontine Phrygia, lived later, from about 430 BCE to 413 BCE. He continued the rule of the Pharnacid dynasty in the same region.

During his time, the Persian Empire was a major power. Satraps like Pharnaces II were key to maintaining the empire's control over its many territories.

Pharnaces, the Persian Commander

This Pharnaces was a Persian noble and a military commander. He lived much later and died in 334 BCE. He is known for his role in a famous battle.

Pharnaces fought against Alexander the Great during the Battle of the Granicus. This was one of the first major battles between Alexander's forces and the Persian army. Sadly, Pharnaces was killed during this important battle.

Pharnaces I of Pontus

Pharnaces I was a significant ruler of the Kingdom of Pontus. He lived in the 2nd century BCE. Pontus was a kingdom located in what is now modern-day Turkey.

He is considered the first truly important king of Pontus. Under his rule, the kingdom grew in power and influence. He worked to expand Pontus's territory and its standing among other kingdoms.

Pharnaces II of Pontus

Pharnaces II was another king of Pontus, and he was the son of a very famous king named Mithridates VI of Pontus. Pharnaces II died in 47 BCE.

After his father's defeat, Pharnaces II tried to regain control of Pontus. He launched a campaign to reconquer his kingdom. However, his efforts were stopped by the famous Roman general Julius Caesar. Caesar defeated Pharnaces II in a swift battle, which Caesar famously described with the words "Veni, vidi, vici" ("I came, I saw, I conquered").
