The Phi Gamma Delta House is a historic building in Orono, Maine. It is a special home for a college club called a fraternity. This house is located near the University of Maine campus.

It was built in 1925 and is the only house on campus in the "Tudor Revival" style. This style looks a bit like old English houses. The house was designed by architects C. Parker Crowell and Walter Lancaster. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. This means it is an important building in American history.

Exploring the Phi Gamma Delta House

The Phi Gamma Delta House stands on College Avenue. This street is on the edge of the University of Maine campus. It is also close to the Stillwater River. This house is the last one in a row of houses for college clubs. These clubs are called fraternities and sororities.

What the House Looks Like

The house is quite large, with two and a half stories. It is made of dark brick. The roof is made of slate and slopes down on the sides. The front of the house has a part that sticks out. This part has a special roof shape called a gable. Another similar part sticks out from the back.

The bricks are laid in a common pattern. Some bricks are shiny or rough, which adds texture. The windows are all different sizes. The front entrance has a unique roofline. It is two stories tall on one side and slopes down to the first floor on the other. Inside, the main living and dining areas are very fancy.

Why the House Was Built

The Phi Gamma Delta House was built in 1925. At that time, the University of Maine needed more places for male students to live. There were only two dorms for them. In 1903, the state government helped the school. They allowed the university to promise to pay back loans for fraternity houses. This helped solve the housing problem.

This house is special because it is the only one built under that program still used by its original fraternity. It is also the only house on campus built in the Tudor Revival style.
