Philibert I was a young ruler from a powerful family called the House of Savoy. He was born on August 17, 1465, in a place called Chambéry. His parents were Amadeus IX, who was the Duke of Savoy, and Yolande of Valois. Philibert was also known as "the Hunter."
Philibert became the Duke of Savoy when he was only seven years old, after his father passed away in 1472. He ruled from 1472 until his own death in 1482.
Becoming a Young Duke
A Duke was a very important leader, like a prince, who ruled over a large area called a duchy. When Philibert's father died, Philibert was too young to rule by himself. So, his mother, Yolande of Valois, became his "regent." A regent is someone who rules for a young king or duke until they are old enough.
In 1474, Philibert was promised in marriage to a girl named Bianca Maria Sforza. She was the daughter of Galeazzo Maria Sforza from Milan. This kind of arranged marriage was common for royal families back then. Philibert and Bianca Maria did not have any children together.
Philibert's Short Reign
During his time as Duke, Philibert faced some challenges. At one point, he was taken by some noblemen from Savoy and held in a city called Turin. However, the King of France, Louis XI, helped to get Philibert released.
Sadly, Philibert's reign was very short. He died from a sickness called tuberculosis when he was just 17 years old. He passed away in Lyons on September 22, 1482. After his death, his younger brother, Charles, became the new Duke of Savoy.
