Philip Basset (born around 1185, died 19 October 1271) was an important official in England. He held the powerful position of Justiciar, which was like a chief judge and a top government minister.

Philip Basset: A Royal Official

Philip Basset came from a well-known family. His father was Alan Basset from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. Philip had two older brothers. One was Gilbert Basset, who was a leader among the barons (powerful noblemen). The other was Fulk, who became the bishop of London.

Early Life and Family

Philip inherited the family estate, the manor of Wycombe. This town became a market borough in 1237. This meant it had special rights to hold markets.

Serving the King

Philip Basset served as the Justiciar of England from May 1261 to July 1263. This was a very important job. The Justiciar was the king's main legal and administrative officer. Philip took over this role from his son-in-law, Hugh le Despencer, 1st Baron le Despencer. He then passed the role back to him later.

Philip served during a time when King Henry III was trying to get back full control of the government. Before this, some powerful barons had taken a lot of power. Philip helped the king during this period.

Family and Legacy

Philip Basset was married two times. With his first wife, Hawise, he had two daughters. Hawise was the granddaughter of a nobleman named Godfrey of Louvain.
