Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Philip Goodwin was an English clergyman, also known as a divine, who lived in the 1600s. He was an important religious figure during a time of big changes in England. He was known for his writings and his role in the church.

Life Story

Philip Goodwin was born in Suffolk, England. He went to St John's College, Cambridge for his education, earning his Master of Arts degree in 1630.

During the First English Civil War, a major conflict in England, Philip Goodwin supported the Parliamentarians. This was the side that supported the Parliament against the King. He was chosen as one of the 'triers' for Hertfordshire. These 'triers' were people who helped decide if new church leaders were suitable for their roles.

In 1645, he became the vicar (a type of church leader) of Watford. However, in 1661, he was removed from this position. This happened because he did not agree with some of the new rules for the church at that time. This was called "nonconformity."

Later, Philip Goodwin decided to follow the new church rules. In 1673, he became the rector (another type of church leader) of Liston, Essex. He married Lucy Clopton, and they had four children: Robert, Thomas, Margaret, and Lucy. His son Robert also became a clergyman, following in his father's footsteps.

Philip Goodwin passed away in 1699. He owned property in Suffolk, which he mentioned in his will.
