About Philip Henry Delamotte
Philip Delamotte was born in 1821 at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. His father was William Alfred Delamotte. Philip grew up to be an artist and became very famous for his photographs of the Crystal Palace in 1854. Later in his life, he became a Professor of Drawing and Fine Art at King's College London.
Recording the Crystal Palace
Philip Delamotte was given a special job: to photograph the Crystal Palace as it was taken apart in 1852. He also photographed its rebuilding and expansion in Sydenham, which finished in 1854. His photographs are a fantastic record of how this huge building was put together.
He published his pictures in several books. These were some of the very first books to include actual photographic prints! Philip Delamotte and Roger Fenton were among the first artists to use photography to record important buildings and events. This was a new idea after the invention of calotype photography. They were both founding members of the Calotype Club. You can even see some of his rare photos online through the National Monuments Record.
Philip Delamotte's Family Life
Philip Delamotte had four brothers and sisters. In 1846, he married Ellen Maria George. They had a son and five daughters. Philip Delamotte passed away on February 24, 1889, in Bromley, Kent.
