Philip Packer (born June 24, 1618, in Groombridge, Kent, England – died December 24, 1686) was an English lawyer and architect. He worked for King Charles II and was a good friend of the famous architect Christopher Wren.

Philip went to University College, Oxford in 1635. He then studied law at the Middle Temple. By 1647, he became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court.

Philip Packer's Work and Life

Philip Packer helped rebuild Groombridge Place in 1662. He worked on this project with his friend, Christopher Wren.

He was also one of the first members of the Royal Society. This is a very old and important group in England that promotes science. Being a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) means you are a recognized expert in your field.

Philip Packer's parents were John Packer and Philippi Mills. His father, John, worked for the King.

Philip married Isabella Berkeley in 1653 in Groombridge, Kent. They had seven children together:

  • Isabella Packer
  • Elizabeth Packer
  • Temperance Packer

Later, Philip married Sarah Isgar on December 20, 1666. Before they were married, Philip and Sarah had three children in Ireland. Philip owned a lot of land there. Their children were:

  • Philip Packer, who later moved to New Jersey in America.
  • James Packer (who passed away in 1690 during a battle in Ireland).
  • William Packer (who also passed away in 1690 during a battle).
