Philip of Montfort, Lord of Castres facts for kids
Philip II of Montfort (died September 24, 1270) was a French nobleman. He was a Count of Squillace in Italy and later the Lord of Castres in France. He was the son of Philip I of Montfort. His family's coat-of-arms showed a red shield with a silver lion that had two tails.
Philip II's Adventures
Philip II joined a big journey led by Charles of Anjou. Their goal was to take control of the Kingdom of Sicily. Philip II helped lead the first group of soldiers at a major battle called the Battle of Benevento. He fought alongside Hugh of Mirepoix.
After this battle, Philip II was given an important job. He had to protect the lands of the Pope, known as the Papal States. He also led soldiers from the Angevin family into the island of Sicily. There, he stopped a rebellion that caused the city of Augusta to be attacked and looted.
When his father died in March 1270, Philip II became the Lord of Castres in France. However, his father's lands in the Middle East, called Outremer, went to his half-brother, John of Montfort. Philip II then joined the Eighth Crusade, a religious war. He died in Tunis during this crusade.

Philip II married Jeanne de Lévis-Mirepoix. They had three children together:
